ADVANCED OPEN WATER CERTIFICATION*

Description

During the Advanced Open Water class, you’ll explore five different specialty classes of diving during various Deep Adventure Dives. This gives you more experience in different conditions and situations than perhaps you learned in your Open Water Course. For instance, you might explore night diving, wreck diving, deep diving, navigation, fish identification, etc when West Palm Beach diving. This course is designed to help advance your current diving skills and knowledge so that you feel more comfortable and confident as a diver.

*Open Water from any recognized agency is a prerequisite for this course

Instructional

You’ll first choose from a long list of Adventure Dives provided by your instructor to plan your education path. There are two required dives, which are Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation, and you get to choose the other three dives. (You’ll complete a total of 5 dives for this course). During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving and the Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.

You may also get to learn skills such as photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks, and much more depending on your specific interests and goals.

Equipment/Gear

You’ll need the basic SCUBA equipment that is typically required for a dive along with a compass and dive knife or dive tool. You’ll also use specialized gear depending on the Adventure Dives you choose. For example, you’d need to use a dry suit for the Dry Suit Adventure Dive or a sidemount configuration during the Sidemount Adventure Dive. Your instructor will explain the equipment that you need and may suggest additional gear, such as a dive light for night diving or a lift bag for search and recovery diving.

Additional Resources

You can choose to read the Advanced Open Water Diver manual and watch the Advanced Open Water Diver video (a book and DVD package) to get started on your learning.

We also offer a Junior Advanced Open Water course!

RESCUE DIVER*

Description

This class focuses on preparing you to be able to help yourself in the water, your buddy and fellow divers under and above the water if troubles arise. You’ll learn to prevent and manage problems in the water, and improve your skills as a diver. Most SCUBA divers who take this course describe it as being the most challenging, yet most rewarding course they’ve ever taken. You’ll practice helpful problem-solving techniques and will feel confident in your ability to provide aid to yourself or other divers if need be. This course requires serious and focused learning, but we still aim to keep the experience fun.

* Advanced Open Water Diver from any recognized agency is a prerequisite for this course.
** This course requires a CPR and First Aid certification earned within two years of taking the course. Fortunately, I can certify you in that too!

Instructional

The Rescue Diver course prepares you to deal with minor and major dive emergencies by using a variety of methods and techniques. Through knowledge development and rescue exercises, you learn what to look for and how to respond. The topics you’ll learn more about are:
•   Self rescue
•   Recognizing and managing stress in other divers
•   Emergency management and equipment
•   Rescuing panicked divers
•   Rescuing unresponsive divers

Equipment/Gear

You’ll need the basic SCUBA equipment that is typically required for a dive along with a pocket mask to practice in-water resuscitation. During your exercises, you’ll work with an oxygen unit, floats, marker buoys and possibly CPR mannequins. Your instructor will explain the equipment that you need and may suggest additional gear, such as your own first aid kit, which you can continue to use throughout your diving career.

Additional Resources

You’ll need to have a CPR certification recognized by the American Heart Association within the past 24 months to complete this course. Fortunately, you can complete this training during the Rescue Diver course! MASTER SCUBA DIVER*

Description

This course is for divers who would want to be the best non-professional divers they can be. Becoming a certified Master Scuba Diver puts you in an elite group of just about 2% of all sea divers. Achieving this rating means that you are certified in 5 Specialties and that you have obtained 50 logged dives. This is the highest rating before the professional SCUBA ratings which means that you cannot obtain liability insurance and cannot work in the industry until you complete an appropriate Divemaster course. Being able to show off this accomplishment proves to other divers and yourself that you’ve spent enough time under the water to apply your exceptional diving skills and knowledge during your dive adventures.

*A Rescue Diver and CPR Certification from any recognized agency is a prerequisite for this course.

ENRICHED AIR DIVER*/NITROX CERTIFICATION

Description

This specialty course is extremely popular among the diving network. This type of diving is done with enriched air nitrox which increases your no-decompression time. By breathing a blended gas with more oxygen, we are therefore absorbing less nitrogen. The Enriched Air Diver course teaches you to dive with more than 21% oxygen. This allows divers to stay down longer and have shorter surface intervals between your Palm Beach, or other dives!

Instructional

This course will teach you the benefits of diving with air that has a higher oxygen level and a lower nitrogen level. After learning the proper methods for breathing with more oxygen and less nitrogen, you’ll be able to apply those skills to a real dive. During a practical session, you’ll focus on:
•   Managing oxygen exposure.
•   Analyzing oxygen content in your scuba tank.
•   Setting your dive computer to compensate for diving with enriched air nitrox.

Equipment/Gear

Typically, most modern SCUBA equipment and dive computers are compatible for using with enriched air, but your diving instructor John can let you know whether your equipment is a match or not and will inform you of any other materials or gear needed for your dive.

Additional Resources

By registering the eLearning option for this course you’ll have access to the Enriched Air Diver Manual which you can read before class, and watch the Enriched Air Diving video.
